Rafay Talpur (b. 1998) is a Pakistani artist from the Sindh region, who later relocated to Lahore to pursue his studies at the prestigious National
College of Arts (NCA). Throughout his academic journey, Talpur has focused on exploring personal experiences through his art, particularly
examining the interplay between light and shadow. His practice primarily involves the drypoint technique and a monochromatic black-and
white palette. Talpur’s work captures the tension between light and darkness, often drawing inspiration from the intricate patterns of shadows
cast on walls in dimly lit indoor spaces. Through his distinctive monochrome approach, Talpur seeks to evoke a profound emotional response,
inviting viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between light and shadow on paper.
“My practice investigates the psychological impact of light and its ability to transform space. Inspired by lived experiences of confinement and
darkness at a madrassa, I recreate the delicate shadow formations found in quiet, interior corners. By documenting where light lands and how
it interacts with the void, my work reflects a personal journey from the breathlessness of shadows to the sanctuary of light.
